The Magus by John Fowles (Signed)
The Magus by John Fowles
First Printing, 1965.
Signed association copy from the collection of editor, publisher, and literary agent, Al Hart. Mr. Hart was best known for editing Ian Fleming's first seven James Bond novels. Hart joined Little, Brown in the mid-1960s after leaving Macmillan. This is one of the two promotional copies of The Magus that he received. (The other copy is also available in a separate listing.) John Fowles signed this copy for Hart on January 19, 1966 and the inscription reads, "Al Hart Very best wishes John Fowles 19. i. 1966".
The Magus was the first novel written by Fowles (although it was published after The Collector), and it is widely considered to be his best work. The Magus ranked on both the editors' and readers' lists of the Modern Library's Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century. In a famous New York Times review, Eliot Fremont-Smith called The Magus “a pyrotechnical extravaganza, a wild, hilarious charade, a dynamo of suspense and horror, a profoundly serious probing into the nature of moral consciousness, a dizzying, electrifying chase through the labyrinth of the soul, an allegorical romance, a sophisticated account of modern love, a ghost story that will send shivers racing down the spine.”
